Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., is a predominantly black, non profit, collegiate organization that was
founded on November 12, 1922. We were founded by seven young school teachers who sought to create a
network of young, black female school teachers. We were later expanded to include all professionally
oriented women. Sigma Gamma Rho was founded at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana which was
then a predominantly white school. The unity this created, pulled these black women together, forming
a lifetime bond and an organization based on high principles, good moral judgement, high scholastic
attainment, and community service. The slogan of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc is " Greater Service,
Greater Progress", indicating that service to the community is a high priority. The members strongly
believe in helping their fellow man, women and child. Our beloved founders are: Nannie Mae Ghan Johnson,
Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Vivian White Marbury, Bessie M. Downey Martin, Cubena McClure, Hattie Mae
Dulin Redford and Dorothy Hanley Whiteside. Our beloved founders enabled this organization to be a highly
prestigous sorority .
